Global Leader in Roundabouts
Since the late 1990s, Carmel has been transforming intersections, replacing traffic signals with an innovative roundabout network.

Carmel, Indiana, known as the “Roundabout Capital of the U.S.”, has built 152 roundabouts as of November 2024 — more than any other city. Starting in 1996 under Mayor Jim Brainard, the shift from traffic lights to roundabouts improved flow, cut congestion, boosted safety, and reduced emissions. Carmel’s approach sets a national standard in urban traffic innovation.
